Shirley Fleming, RYT-200
Owner, Harlingen Yoga Center
Initially, yoga started as a secondary physical discipline to compliment weight training. Feeling the effects that a yoga practice provides to the body, lead me to deepen my own personal practice and a desire to teach it to others. I received my basic teacher training from Lex Gillan of the Yoga Institute in Houston, Texas in February 2008. The Yoga Institute is one of the oldest national teacher training programs in the US. I continued my education in yoga with Lex Gillian’s Advanced Teacher Training in Taos, New Mexico in June, 2009.
I have also trained and attended workshops with Brigitte Longueville, Kate Potter, and Doug Swenson. I teach Hatha and Raja Yoga in the Iyengar lineage, including group classes in Gentle and Beginner, Vinyasa (Flow), All Levels Yoga, Yoga with weights, Tapas Yoga and Restorative. I have been practicing yoga for about 10 years. I have been actively teaching since 2008. Since Janaury, 2009, I have taught more than 400 hours of yoga. I am currently register with the Yoga Alliance-200 RYT.
I believe yoga will make you feel better about yourself whether you are seeking a change in your physical body or emotional body. Yoga is a discipline that will compliment any other physical discipline. I will show you how to relieve physical tension, calm your breath and help gain clarity of mind.
In Shirley’s class, although you may be practicing with a group, it is often said she has the ability of making you feel like the class was tailored just for you. It has also been said that her calm, soothing voice guides you through each pose step-by-step so that you can relax and enjoy your practice.

She specializes in Restorative Alignment, which provides the opportunity to restore and rejuvenate the innate muscular and energetic capacity of the body and continuing to build and strengthen the body with the practice of asanas with consciousness of movement in order to optimize the practice of yoga, accomplished using the BackMitra, as well as other props and various positions. She also has had more than two years of Anatomy and Physiology classes and training combined through her university education and yoga teacher training.
